The MDL is a Michigan (USA) public library serving nearly 20,000 residents in Calhoun County. In the past two years the library has expanded services, collections and programming for all ages, with resounding support from our community. The Head of Youth Services will have an opportunity to be involved in an exhilarating set of projects including redesign of the MDL youth interior environment, keeping ahead of the teen technology curve, and developing a variety of print/electronic resource collections. Current youth programming attendance is at capacity and proximity to the local middle school provides an afterschool audience for unique ‘tween and teen programming. AVAILABLE POSITION: Head of Youth Services
WORK SCHEDULE: Full-time, exempt 40 hours per week, including some evening and weekend hours
SALARY RANGE: $36,000 – 45,000 (range increase anticipated July 1, 2007); benefits include health, life, vision and dental insurance, generous retirement plan (library contributes 5% of salary and matches an additional staff contribution up to 5%), paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, numerous continuing education opportunities, and paid membership in a professional organization,.
JOB SUMMARY: The Head of Youth Services is a member of the management team assisting in planning, prioritizing and setting goals for Marshall District Library programs and services. This position supervises five members of the staff.
The Head of Youth Services is responsible for coordinating and evaluating the delivery of library services to youth, providing direct public services at the Youth Desk, and participating in collection development activities.
REQUIREMENTS: ALA/MLS with preferred minimum of 4 years public library experience, including successful supervisory experience. Commitment to customer service excellence. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Expertise with computer technology and an understanding of its potential in providing high quality library services. Ability to organize multiple assignments and work independently. Demonstrated initiative and creative approach to attaining departmental goals. Knowledge of the philosophy and techniques of library service for children and teens.
Additionally to perform the essential functions of the position, an individual may be required to maintain a physical condition necessary for sitting, walking, and/or standing for long periods of time; lifting or carrying light to moderately heavy objects; operating assigned equipment, including computers.
